Brand-New Call of Duty Update Just Added One of the Best Maps Ever

A brand-new update just hit Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4that brings one of the franchise's most beloved maps back into rotation just days after launch. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 players now have another very familiar battleground to jump into as Infinity Ward prepares for the shooter's first season.

Modern Warfare 4 may have only launched on October 23, but Infinity Ward is already expanding its multiplayer offerings. The game debuted with 12 traditional 6v6 maps, three sizable Ground War environments, four Gunfight arenas, and the experimental Kill Block mode, making for a package fans seem to like. Reception has been generally positive so far, particularly for its campaign, though players have raised concerns about multiplayer balance, matchmaking, and other familiar Call of Duty issues like SBMM. Regardless, Infinity Ward isn't wasting much time adding to Modern Warfare 4, and its first returning multiplayer map is one that longtime fans probably know better than almost any other.

Modern Warfare 4 Brings Back Shipment Just Four Days After Launch

Infinity Ward has officially brought Shipment back to Modern Warfare 4 in its October 27 update, giving players access to the iconic 6v6 map just four days after launch. The MW4 version of the map takes place at a Russian harbor surrounded by water and concrete buildings, although its familiar layout of tightly packed shipping containers remains largely unchanged. Better yet, a dedicated Shipment 24/7 playlist is already available, letting players jump straight into the map without waiting for it to appear in regular rotation. Shipment has long been one of Call of Duty's most popular destinations for quickly leveling weapons, completing camo challenges, and racking up huge kill counts, so its return should be especially welcome for players working through MW4's progression system.

Shipment's history stretches back to 2007's original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, though its inclusion in that game was apparently an accident. In a 2023 interview, Infinity Ward multiplayer design director Geoff Smith explained that the studio originally created Shipment for split-screen multiplayer and internal testing, but someone forgot to remove it from the final multiplayer playlist and made it to the full release. Smith called its inclusion "truly an accident," and the rest is Call of Duty history. The map later returned in games like Call of Duty: WWII, Vanguard, and the rebooted Modern Warfare trilogy, usually with slight visual changes but the same basic structure, making it one of the series' most enduring maps.

The lasting appeal is easy to understand, even if Shipment can be incredibly frustrating at times. The map's tiny layout practically eliminates downtime, with players regularly spawning into firefights, getting several kills, dying, and repeating the cycle within seconds. That makes the map especially useful for weapon progression and challenges, but it also delivers the kind of ridiculous multiplayer chaos that larger, more carefully designed maps sometimes can't match. Shipment might not be Call of Duty at its most tactical, but few maps have ever delivered the immediate, intense action that made the series so popular.

Going forward, Infinity Ward still has plenty of multiplayer feedback to address, while new content for MW4 is already lined up, including the upcoming Possession and Infected modes and Season 1 on November 6. In the meantime, Shipment gives players something familiar to enjoy, although the early Shipment frenzy might make it hard for the game's newer maps and modes to gain traction with fans. Whether Shipment overshadows the upcoming additions remains to be seen, but after nearly 20 years of chaotic matches, Call of Duty players apparently still haven't gotten tired of those shipping containers.
