Reigns is somehow 10 years old, which is upsetting enough on its own, but developer Nerial and publisher Devolver Digital are celebrating the occasion with a sizeable free update to the original card-swiping kingdom simulator.
First released in 2016, Reigns built an entire game around the simple act of swiping cards left or right as you attempted to keep your increasingly precarious monarchy alive. It worked rather well too, with Devolver saying more than four million players have now played games in the Reigns series.

The original game is getting some attention for its birthday, with a new anniversary update available now on PC and mobile.
This isn’t just a handful of celebratory cosmetics either. Nerial has added 190 new cards alongside new objectives, characters, deaths and even a new secret ending.
There’s also a fresh storyline involving a local witch and her prophecies. If you can somehow keep your ruler alive for 10 years – which anyone who has spent time with Reigns will know is considerably easier said than done – you’ll be able to see those predictions begin to play out.
It gives returning players a decent excuse to start swiping their way towards another inevitable and probably ridiculous death.
Reigns began as a wonderfully simple idea, essentially mixing Tinder-style swiping with the responsibility of running an entire medieval kingdom. Every decision affects different factions and resources, and keeping everybody happy for any meaningful length of time tends to be impossible.
The success of the original eventually turned Reigns into a much larger series, including Reigns: Her Majesty, Reigns: Three Kingdoms and Reigns: Beyond.
It has also managed to wander into some fairly sizeable licensed universes along the way with Reigns: Game of Thrones and the more recent Reigns: The Witcher.
Reigns anniversary sale discounts
Devolver is also discounting the Reigns series as part of the anniversary celebrations.
The Steam discounts are available until August 17 at 10am PT, while the App Store and Google Play offers run until August 20.
The sale includes:
- Reigns – 67% off, $2.99
- Reigns Beyond – 40% off, $4.99
- Reigns: Game of Thrones – 67% off, $3.99
- Reigns: Her Majesty – 67% off, $2.99
- Reigns: The Witcher – 30% off, $5.99
- Reigns: Three Kingdoms – 50% off, $2.99
Reigns: Three Kingdoms is not currently available on mobile.
The Reigns 10th anniversary update is free for existing owners and is available now on PC, iOS and Android.
Ten years later, it turns out swiping left and right is still capable of ruining your life. At least in Reigns you normally get a funny death out of it.
